Rabbit Hole : Part 11a Full The Revealing of your inner WORLD

Sahasrara: The Crown Chakra

Chakra07.gif

Sahasrara is generally considered to be the chakra of pure consciousness. Its role may be envisioned somewhat similarly to that of the pituitary gland, which secretes emanuel hormones to communicate to the rest of the endocrine system and also connects to the central nervous system via the hypothalamus. The thalamus is thought to have a key role in the physical basis of consciousness. Symbolized by a lotus with one thousand petals, it is located at the crown of the head. Sahasrara is represented by the colour violet and it
involves such issues as inner wisdom and the death of the body.

Sahasrara's inner aspect deals with the release of karma, physical

action with meditation, mental action with universal consciousness and

unity, and emotional action with "beingness".[31]
Chakra (derived from the Sanskrit cakraṃ चक्रं ([ˈtʃəkrə̃]), pronounced [ˈtʃəkrə] in Hindi; Pali: ॰हक्क chakka, Chinese: 轮, Tibetan: འཁོར་ལོ་; khorlo) is a Sanskrit word that translates as "wheel" or "turning".[1]

WHEEL?? YOU MEAN THIS WHEEL FOUND IN MANY MANY DIFFERENT PHILOSOPHIES??

The Dharmacakra (Sanskrit: धर्मचक्) or Dhammacakka (Pāli), Tibetan chos kyi 'khor lo (འཀོར་ལོ།), Chinese fălún 法輪, "Wheel of Dharma" or "Wheel of Law" is a symbol that has represented dharma, the Buddha's teaching of the path to enlightenment, since the early period of Indian Buddhism.[1]

It is also sometimes translated as wheel of doctrine or wheel of law. A similar symbol is also in use in Jainism. It is one of the Ashtamangala Symbols

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dharmachakra

In Buddhism—according to the Pali Canon, Vinayapitaka, Khandhaka, Mahavagga, Dhammacakkappavattanasutta—number of spokes of the Dharmacakra represent various meanings:

  • 8 spokes representing the Noble Eightfold Path (Ariya magga).

  • 12 spokes representing the Twelve Laws of Dependent Origination (Paticcasamuppāda).

  • 24 spokes representing the Twelve Laws of Dependent Origination and the Twelve Laws of Dependent Termination (Paticcasamuppāda).

  • 31 spokes representing 31 realms of existence (11 realms of desire, 16 realms of form and 4 realms of formlessness).
In Buddhism, Parts of the Dharmacakra also representing:

  • Its overall shape is that of a circle (cakra), representing the perfection of the dharma teaching

  • The hub stands for discipline, which is the essential core of meditation practice

  • The rim, which holds the spokes, refers to mindfulness or samādhi which holds everything together

The corresponding mudrā, or symbolic hand gesture, is known as the Dharmacakra Mudrā.

The Dharmacakra is one of the eight auspicious symbols of Tibetan Buddhism.

The dharma wheel can refer to the dissemination of the dharma teaching from country to country. In this sense the dharma wheel began rolling in India, carried on to Central Asia, and then arrived in South East Asia and East Asia.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eight_auspicious_symbols

Ashtamangala are a sacred suite of Eight Auspicious Signs endemic to a number of Dharmic Traditions such as Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, and Sikhism. The symbols or 'symbolic attributes' (Tibetan: ཕྱག་མཚན; Wylie: phyag mtshan) are yidam and teaching tools. Not only do these attributes, these energetic signatures, point to qualities of enlightened mindstream, but they are the investiture that ornaments these enlightened 'qualities' (Sanskrit: guna; Tibetan: ཡོན་ཏན; Wylie: yon tan). Many cultural enumerations and variations of the Ashtamangala are extant.

Groupings of eight auspicious symbols were originally used in India at ceremonies such as an investiture or coronation of a king. An early grouping of symbols included: throne, swastika, handprint, hooked knot,
vase of jewels, water libation flask, pair of fishes, lidded bowl. In

Buddhism, these eight symbols of good fortune represent the offerings

made by the gods to Shakyamuni Buddha immediately after he gained

enlightenment.[1]

Wheel

Wheel of Law

The Wheel of Law (Sanskrit: Dharmacakra; Tibetan: ཁོར་ལོ; Wylie: khor lo), sometimes representing Sakyamuni Buddha and the Dharma teaching; also representing the mandala and chakra. This symbol is commonly used by Tibetan Buddhists where it sometimes also includes an inner wheel of the Gankyil (Tibetan), but in Nepal the Wheel of Law is not used by Nepalese Buddhists in the eight auspicious symbols. Instead of the Dharma wheel, a Fly Whisk may be used as one of the ashtamangala symbolizing Tantric manifestations and is made of a yak's tail attached to a silver staff and used during ritual recitation and fanning the deities in an auspicious religious ceremony (puja);

another guise of the Dharmacakra which unites the functionality of the

yak's tail with the doctrinal aspect of the "Wheel of Law" is the Mani wheel. The Sudarshana Chakra is a Hindu wheel-symbol.

CHAKRAS???

Chakras are ultimately as real or unreal as the nerve plexuses
and endocrine glands to which they correspond, but, in ultimate
truth, anything with a form, whether perceptible to the human
eye or the third eye, is but symbolic of a function of spirit,
or definitionless awareness.

Kirlian photography first gained publicity in the 60s, when a

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axis_Mundi

The axis mundi (also cosmic axis, world axis, world pillar, columna cerului, center of the world) is a ubiquitous symbol that crosses human cultures. The image expresses
a point of connection between sky and earth where the four compass

directions meet.

At this point travel and correspondence is made
between higher and lower realms.[1]

Communication from lower realms may ascend to higher ones and blessings

from higher realms may descend to lower ones and be disseminated to all.[2] The spot functions as the omphalos (navel), the world's point of beginning.[3][4]

Shamanic function

A common shamanic concept, and a universally told story, is that of the healer traversing the axis mundi to bring back knowledge from the other world. It may be
seen in the stories from Odin and the World Ash Tree to the Garden of Eden and Jacob's Ladder to Jack and the Beanstalk and Rapunzel. It is the essence of the journey described in The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri.

The epic poem relates its hero's descent and ascent through a series of spiral structures that take him from through the core of the earth,

from the depths of Hell to celestial Paradise. It is also a central

tenet in the Southeastern Ceremonial Complex.[21]

Anyone or anything suspended on the axis between heaven and earth becomes a repository of potential knowledge. A special status accrues to the thing suspended: a serpent, a victim of crucifixion or hanging, a rod, a fruit, mistletoe.

Derivations of this idea find form in the Rod of Asclepius, an emblem of the medical profession, and in the caduceus, an emblem of correspondence and commercial professions. The staff in these emblems represents the axis mundi while the serpents act as guardians of, or guides to, knowledge.[22]

Places

Because the axis mundi is an idea that unites a number of concrete images, no contradiction exists in regarding multiple spots as "the center of the world." The symbol can operate in a number of locales at

once.[6] The ancient Greeks regarded several sites as places of earth's omphalos (navel) stone, notably the oracle at Delphi, while still maintaining a belief in a cosmic world tree and in Mount Olympus as the abode of the gods. Judaism has the Temple Mount and Mount Sinai, Christianity has the Mount of Olives and Calvary, Islam has Mecca, said to be the place on earth that was created first, and the Temple Mount (Dome of the Rock). In addition to Kun-Lun the ancient Chinese recognized four mountains as pillars of the world.[11]

Sacred places constitute world centers (omphalos) with the altar or place of prayer as the axis. Altars, incense sticks, candles and torches form the axis by sending a column of smoke, and prayer, toward

heaven. The architecture of sacred places often reflects this role.

"Every temple or palace--and by extension, every sacred city or royal

residence--is a Sacred Mountain, thus becoming a Centre.

"[12] The stupa of Hinduism, and later Buddhism, reflects Mount Meru.Cathedrals are laid out in the form of a cross, with the vertical bar representing the union of earth and heaven as the horizontal bars represent union of people to one another, with the

altar at the intersection. Pagoda structures in Asian temples take the form of a stairway linking earth and heaven. A steeple in a church or a minaret in a mosque also serve as connections of earth and heaven.

Structures such as the maypole, derived from the Saxons' Irminsul, and the totem pole among indigenous peoples of the Americas also represent world axes. The calumet, or sacred pipe, represents a column of smoke (the soul) rising form a world center.[13] A mandala creates a world center within the boundaries of its two-dimensional space analogous to that created in three-dimensional space by a shrine.[14]

This image exemplifies the blend of art and science during the Renaissance and provides the perfect example of Leonardo's keen interest in proportion. In addition, this picture represents a cornerstone of Leonardo's attempts to relate man to nature. Encyclopaedia Britannica online states, "Leonardo envisaged the great picture chart of the human body he had produced through his anatomical drawings and Vitruvian Man as a cosmografia del minor mondo (cosmography of the microcosm). He believed the workings of the human body to be an analogy for the workings of the universe."

According to Leonardo's preview in the accompanying text, written in mirror writing, it was made as a study of the proportions of the (male) human body as described in Vitruvius:

palmus autem habet quattuor digitos"

  • a palm is the width of four fingers

  • a foot is the width of four palms (i.e., 12 inches)

  • a cubit is the width of six palms

  • a pace is four cubits

  • a man's height is four cubits (and thus 24 palms)

  • "erit eaque mensura ad manas pansas,"

  • the length of a man's outspread arms (arm span) is equal to his height

  • the distance from the hairline to the bottom of the chin is one-tenth of a man's height

  • the distance from the top of the head to the bottom of the chin is one-eighth of a man's height

  • the distance from the bottom of the neck to the hairline is one-sixth of a man's height

  • the maximum width of the shoulders is a quarter of a man's height

  • the distance from the middle of the chest to the top of the head is a quarter of a man's height

  • the distance from the elbow to the tip of the hand is a quarter of a man's height

  • the distance from the elbow to the armpit is one-eighth of a man's height

  • the length of the hand is one-tenth of a man's height

  • the distance from the bottom of the chin to the nose is one-third of the length of the head

  • the distance from the hairline to the eyebrows is one-third of the length of the face

  • the length of the ear is one-third of the length of the face

  • the length of a man's foot is one-sixth of his height

Leonardo is clearly illustrating Vitruvius' De architectura 3.1.2-3 which reads:

SNAKE WORSHIPERS??? NO PARIETAL EYE GOD WORSHIPING ESOTERIC KNOWLEDGE

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parietal_eye

A parietal eye, also known as a parietal organ or third-eye, is a part of the epithalamus present in some animal species. The eye may be photoreceptive and is usually associated with the pineal gland, regulating circadian rhythmicity and hormone production for thermoregulation.[1]

The parietal eye (very small grey oval between the regular eyes) of a juvenile bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana)

Adult carolina anole (Anolis carolinensis) clearly showing the parietal eye (small grey/clear oval) at the top of its head.

Among fish, lampreys retain two functional "third" eyes, one developed from the parietal gland, and the other from the pineal gland. These are located one behind the other in the centre of the upper surface of the braincase. Because lampreys are amongst the most primitive of all living vertebrates, it is possible that this was the original condition among vertebrates, and may have allowed bottom-dwelling species to sense threats from above.[6]

Peculiarities

The main elements of Orphism differed from popular ancient Greek religion in the following ways:

* by characterizing human souls as divine and immortal but doomed to live (for a period) in a "grievous circle" of successive bodily lives

through metempsychosis or the transmigration of souls.

* by prescribing an ascetic way of life which, together with secret initiation rites, was supposed

to guarantee not only eventual release from the "grievous circle" but

also communion with god(s).

* by warning of postmortem punishment for certain transgressions committed during life.

* by being founded upon sacred writings about the origin of gods and human beings.

Compare with Hinduism, Buddhism and Gnosticism.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ophites

The Ophites (also called Ophians or Serpentinians) (from Greek ὄφιανοι > ὄφις = snake) were members of numerous Gnostic sects in Syria and Egypt about 100 AD. The Ophite sects revered the serpent of Genesis as a symbol of gnosis, which the tyrant Yaldabaoth tried to hide from Adam and Eve. As John 3:14 tells that "as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up," the Ophites felt perfectly justified in their position,

and Christian heresiologists took particular offense at turning their

view of the serpent on its head.

Irenaeus wrote a history of heresy toward the end of the second century from which our principal mythos is derived; Clement of Alexandria (Stromata, vii. 17, § 108) mentions beside the "Cainists" the "Ophians" (Οφιανοί),

saying that their name is derived from the object of their worship. Philaster, an author of the fourth century, places the Ophites, the Cainites, and the Sethians at the head of all heresies (ch. 1-3), because he holds that they owed their origin to the serpent (the Devil).

In Clement and Origen

Clement of Alexandria incidentally mentions Cainites and Ophites (Strom. vii. 17, p. 900), but gives no explanation of their tenets. Nor do we

suppose that there is any reason to connect with this sect his

reprobation of the use of serpent ornaments by women (Paed. ii. 13, p. 245).

___________________________________________________________________________________

NOTICE THESE ARE THE CHAKRAS????

Reconstruction from Histoire critique du Gnosticisme; Jacques Matter, 1826, Vol. III, Plate I, D.

Origen is led to speak of the Ophites (Contra Celsum. vi. 28 sqq.) by an accusation of Celsus that the Christians counted seven heavens, and spoke of the Creator as

an accursed divinity, inasmuch as he was worthy of execration for

cursing the serpent who introduced the first human beings to the

knowledge of good and evil.

Origen replies that Celsus had mixed up

matters, and had confounded with the Christians the Ophites, who so far

from being Christians would not hear the name of Jesus, nor own him to

have been so much as a wise and virtuous man, nor would admit anyone

into their assembly until he had cursed Jesus.

It may be doubted whether Origen has not here been misinformed about a sect of which he

intimates that he knows but little. According to all other authorities

the Ophites claimed to be Christians. Elsewhere (Comm. in St. Matt. iii. 852) Origen classes the Ophites as heretics of the graver sort with the followers of Marcion, Valentinus, Basilides, and Apelles.

The identity of the nomenclature proves that these Ophites of Origen

are a branch of the sect described by Irenaeus, and therefore justifies

our application of the name Ophite to that sect.

[edit] Hebdomad

The names of the seven princes of the Hebdomad, as given by Origen, agree completely with the list of Irenaeus. Origen also gives the names

of the seven demons. Irenaeus only gives the name of their chief, but

that one is enough to establish a more than accidental coincidence,

since it is a name we should not have expected to find as the name of a

demon, namely, Michael.

The name Prunikos is also found in the report of Origen.

Origen gives what must have been one of the valuable secrets of this sect, viz. the

formula to be addressed by an ascending soul to each of the princes of

the hebdomad in order to propitiate him to grant a passage through his dominions.

Perhaps the secret would have been more jealously guarded if it were not that in addition to the use of the formula, it seems to

hare been necessary to produce at each gate a certain symbol. These

would only be in the possession of the initiated, and we may imagine

that they were buried with them. He gives the formulae in the inverse

order; i.e. first the formula to be used by a soul which has passed

through the highest heaven and desires to enter the Ogdoad; next the

formula to be used in order to gain admission to the highest heaven,

and so on.

[edit] Diagrams

Main article: Ophite Diagrams

SEE BELOW

Origen also gives a description of an Ophite diagram, which Celsus likewise had met with, consisting of an outer circle, named Leviathan, denoting the soul of all things, with ten internal circles, variously coloured, the diagram containing also the figures and names of the seven demons.

Many have attempted to reproduce the figure from Origen's

description, but in truth Origen has not given us particulars enough to

enable us to make a restoration with confidence, or even to enable us

to understand what was intended to be represented. Origen names

Euphrates as the introducer of the doctrine of the sect which he

describes, and the sect may have been that branch of the Ophites who

are called Peratae.

Unique in this Gnostic system is the insight it gives us into esoteric physiological gnosis:The cerebellum, by an ineffable and inscrutable process, attracts through the pineal gland the spiritual and life-giving essence from the vaulted chamber. And on receiving this, the cerebellum [also] in an ineffable manner imparts

Tapp

and Huxley (5, 6) have found that the weight of
the pineal gland increases gradually from puberty
to old age.

Although we know that the

percentage of calcification does not change after
the age of 30 years, no autopsy-based studies
have revealed information about the evolving
size of the pineal gland during development.
MR imaging has provided a marked improvement
in the ability to locate and characterize
tissue.

For instance, small noncalcified structures

that cannot be detected with computed
tomography are seen clearly on MR images,
especially in the midline on sagittal sections
(7).

In the pineal region, where a variety of

tumors occur, including germ cell tumors and
pinealomas (8, 9), knowledge of the normal size
of the developing gland can help to distinguish
healthy tissue from tumor.

On T1- and T2-

weighted images, tumors of the pineal region
are usually similar in signal intensity to the
gland itself (8, 9). In addition, the lack of a
blood-brain barrier in the normal pineal gland
results in an inability to separate a normal gland
from a neoplasm on the basis of enhancement
characteristics.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pineal_gland

The pineal gland (also called the pineal body, epiphysis cerebri, epiphysis or the "third eye") is a small endocrine gland in the vertebrate brain.

The pineal gland is a midline structure, and is often seen in plain skull X-rays, as it is often calcified.

It is sensitive to different levels of light and is essential to the functioning of an animal's biological clock. In many animals, including humans, the pineal gland synthesizes a hormone called melatonin in periods of darkness.
??????

Melatonin synthesis is halted when light hits the retina of the eye, sending impulses to the gland via the optic nerve. Besides influencing daily, or circadian, rhythms such those of as sleep
and temperature, the pineal gland and melatonin appear to direct annual

rhythms and seasonal changes in animals. ??????????

The pineal gland and melatonin are now being studied for their roles in sleep, reproduction, aging, and seasonal affective disorder . In humans the pineal gland begins to produce melatonin at age 3 months; production falls steadily from puberty on.

Redemption

For the redemption of this world below, Christ was made to descend in the days of Herod, from the region of the unbegotten, a man himself threefold, having in himself powers from the three parts of the world, "for in Him the whole

Pleroma

was pleased to dwell bodily," and in Him was the whole Godhead. His

mission is in order that those elements which descended from, above may

by him be enabled to return, while those elements which plotted against

the higher ones shall be separated and left for punishment.

When it is said "the Son of Man came not to destroy the world, but that the world through Him might be saved," by "the world" is meant the two superior parts, to agenneton and to autogenneton.
  • When the Scripture says "that we should not be condemned with the world," by the world is meant the third part or the kosmos idikos; for that part must be destroyed, but the two superior parts freed from destruction.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ophite_Diagrams

The Ophite Diagrams are ritual and esoteric diagrams used by the Ophite Gnostic sect, who revered the serpent from the Garden of Eden as a symbol of wisdom, which the malevolent Demiurge tried to hide from Adam and Eve.

Celsus and his opponent Origen (Contra Celsum, vi. §§ 24-38) both describe the diagrams, though not in the same way.

Celsus describes them as ten separate circles, circumscribed by one

circle, the world-soul, Leviathan, divided by a thick black line, Tartarus, together with a square, with words said at the gates of Paradise. Further to this, the Ophites are said by Celsus to add the sayings of prophets,

and circles upon circles, with some things written within the two great

cosmological circles representing God the Father, and God the Son.

Origen maintains that there were two concentric circles, across the diameter of which were inscribed the words ΠΑΤΗΡ ("father") and ΥΙΟC

("son"); a smaller circle hung from the larger one, with the words

ΑΓΑΠΗ ("love"). A wall divides the realm of light from the middle

realm. Two other concentric circles, one light and one dark, represent

light and shadow.

Hanging from this double circle was a circle with the inscription ΖΩΗ ("life"), and this enclosed two other circles which

intersected each other and formed a rhomboid. In the common field were

the words ΣΟΦΙΑC ΦΥCΙC ("the nature of wisdom"), above ΓΝΩCΙC

("knowledge"), and below ΣΟΦΙΑ ("wisdom"); in the rhomboid was ΣΟΦΙΑC

ΠΡΟΝΟΙΑ ("the providence of wisdom"). There were altogether seven

circles, with the names of seven archons:

* Michael, in the form of a lion

* Suriel, of a bull

* Raphael, of a dragon

* Gabriel, of an eagle

* Thauthabaoth ("Tohu wa-Bohu"), of a bear's head

* Erataoth, of a dog's head

* Onoel or Thartharaoth, of an ass's head

The archons are perhaps identical with the seven generations of Yaldabaoth. They signify the corporeal world, which follows the middle realm, and with which the dominion of Sophia ends. The Sephirot of the Jewish Kabbalah may be in some way connected with this diagram. But the serpent as

symbol is found likewise in connection with the mysteries of Egypt, Greece, Phoenicia, Syria, and even Babylonia and India

Ophiuchus was one of the 48 constellations listed by the 2nd century astronomer Ptolemy, and it remains one of the 88 modern constellations. It was formerly referred to as Serpentarius (/ˌsɜrpənˈtɛəriəs/), a Latin word meaning the same as its current name.

THIS IS KIND OF STRANGE IS IT NOT???

A 1992 survey of American health organizations found that 62% of professional associations used the rod of Asclepius, whereas in commercial organizations, 76% used the caduceus.[21]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rod_of_Asclepius

The rod of Asclepius (; sometimes also spelled Asklepios or Aesculapius), also known as the asklepian,[1] is an ancient symbol associated with astrology, the Greek god Asclepius and with medicine and healing. It consists of a serpent entwined around a staff. The name of the symbol derives from its early and widespread association with Asclepius, the son of Apollo, who was a practitioner of medicine in ancient Greek mythology.

His attributes, the snake and the staff, sometimes depicted separately in antiquity, are combined in this symbol.[2] The Rod of Asclepius also represents the constellation Ophiuchus (or Ophiuchus Serpentarius), considered by some to be the thirteenth sign of the sidereal zodiac. Hippocrates himself was a worshipper of Asclepius.[3]

A similar symbol, Nehushtan, is mentioned in the Bible in the Book of Numbers (Numbers 21:6).

Then the LORD sent poisonous serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many Israelites died. The people came to Moses and said, "We have sinned by speaking against the LORD and against you; pray to the LORD to take away the serpents from us." So Moses prayed for the people. And the LORD
said to Moses, "Make a poisonous serpent, and set it on a pole; and

everyone who is bitten shall look at it and live." So Moses made a

serpent of bronze, and put it upon a pole; and whenever a serpent bit

someone, that person would look at the serpent of bronze and live.[13]

The Sethians were a group of ancient Gnostics who date their existence to before Christianity.[1] Their influence spread throughout the Mediterranean into the later systems of the Basilideans and the Valentinians[citation needed].

Their thinking, though it is predominantly Judaic in foundation, is arguably strongly influenced by Platonism. Sethians are so called for their veneration of the biblical Seth, third son of Adam and Eve, who is depicted in their myths of creation as a divine incarnation;

consequently, the offspring or 'posterity' of Seth are held to comprise

a superior elect within human society.

The Sethian or 'Classic' gnostic myth

Commonly, the Sethian cosmogonic myth describes an intended prologue to the events of Genesis and the rest of the Pentateuch, which by its emendation brings about a radical reinterpretation of the

typical orthodox Jewish conception of creation, and the divine's

relation to reality. This myth is typically presupposed by Sethian

manuscripts, and occasionally by those of later schools. Many of their

concepts derived from a fusion of Hellenic philosophy, Platonic (c. 427–c. 347 BC), and later, Neoplatonic (ca. 253 AD) concepts with the Old Testament. This was also done by Hebrew scholar Philo (20 BC - 40 AD), who had engaged in a similar fusion.

The Sethian cosmogony was most famously contained in the Apocryphon of John, which describes an unknown God, the same as Paul had done in the Acts of the Apostles 17:23.

The latter conception defines God through a series of explicit positive statements called cataphatic theology, themselves universal but in the divine taken to their superlative degrees: as well as being explicitly male, he is omniscient and omnipotent. The Sethian conception of God is, by contrast, defined through negative theology exclusively: he is immovable, invisible, intangible, ineffable.
This Apophatic Theology (Negative theology) mode of thinking about God is found throughout Gnosticism, Vedantic Hinduism, Platonic and Aristotelean theology, and Eastern Orthodox theology as well. It may be seen in some Judaic sources.

Sethianism posits a transcendent hidden invisible God that is beyond ordinary description, much as Plato (see Parmenides) and Philo had also stated earlier in history. It is only possible to say what God

isn't, and the experience of it remains something, again, in defiance of rational description.

[edit] The emanation of the spiritual universe

This original God went through a series of emanations, during which its essence is seen as spontaneously expanding into many

successive 'generations' of paired male and female beings, called

'aeons'. The first of these is the Barbelo,

a figure common throughout Sethianism, who is coactor in the emanations

that follow. The aeons that result can be seen as representative of the

various attributes of God, themselves indiscernible when not abstracted

from their origin. In this sense, the Barbelo and the emanations may be

seen as poetic devices allowing an otherwise utterly unknowable God to

be discussed in a meaningful way amongst initiates.

Collectively, God and the aeons comprise the sum total of the spiritual universe, known

as the Pleroma.

At this point the myth is still only dealing with a spiritual, non-material universe. In some versions of the myth, the Spiritual Aeon

Sophia imitates God's actions in performing an emanation of her

own, without the prior approval of the other aeons in the Pleroma. This

results in a crisis within the Pleroma, leading to the appearance of

the Yaldabaoth, a 'serpent with a lion's head'. This figure is commonly known as the demiurge, after the figure in Plato's Timaeus. (Gr. δημιουργός dēmiourgós, Latinized demiurgus, meaning "artisan" or "craftsman", lit. "public or skilled worker" (from δήμιος demios (belonging to the public) + έργον ergon (work)[2] This being is at first hidden by Sophia but subsequently escapes, stealing a portion of divine power from her in the process.

[edit] The creation of matter

Using this stolen power, Yaldabaoth creates a material world in imitation of the divine Pleroma. To complete this task, he spawns a

group of entities known collectively as Archons, 'petty rulers' and craftsmen of the physical world. Like him, they are commonly depicted as theriomorphic,

having the heads of animals.

Some texts explicitly identify the Archons with the fallen angels described in the Enoch tradition in Judaic

apocrypha. At this point the events of the Sethian narrative begin to

cohere with the events of Genesis, with the demiurge and his archontic cohorts fulfilling the role of the creator. As in Genesis,

the demiurge declares himself to be the only god, and that none exist

superior to him; however, the audience's knowledge of what has gone

before casts this statement, and the nature of the creator itself, in a

radically different light.

The demiurge creates Adam, during the process unwittingly transferring the portion of power stolen from Sophia into the first

physical human body. He then creates Eve from Adam's rib, in an attempt

to isolate and regain the power he has lost.

By way of this he attempts to rape Eve who now contains Sophia's divine power; several texts

depict him as failing when Sophia's spirit transplants itself into the Tree of Knowledge;

thereafter, the pair are 'tempted' by the serpent, and eat of the

forbidden fruit, thereby once more regaining the power that the

demiurge had stolen.

As is evident, the addition of the prologue radically alters the significance of events in Eden; rather than emphasizing a fall of human weakness in breaking God's

command, Sethians (and their inheritors) emphasize a crisis of the

Divine Fullness as it encounters the ignorance of matter, as depicted

in stories about Sophia. Adam and Eve's removal from the Archon's

paradise is seen as a step towards freedom from the Archons, and the

serpent in the Garden of Eden

in some cases becomes a heroic, salvific figure rather than an

adversary of humanity or a 'proto-Satan'. Eating the fruit of Knowledge

is the first act of human salvation from cruel, oppressive powers.

[edit] Modern use

The classical Sethian doctrine of the 1st and 2nd centuries has exerted a pervasive inspirational influence upon certain contemporary

mystics and esotericists. The British-German group the Knights of Seth were inspired by them.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naassenes

The Naassenes or Naasseni (from Hebrew נָחָשׁ na'ash , snake) were a Gnostic sect from around 100 AD The Naassenes claimed to have been taught their doctrines by Mariamne, a disciple of James the Just.[1]

It is possible that the name is a portmanteau of "Nasoraean" and "Essenes,"[2] and the retention of the Hebrew form shows that their beliefs may

represent the earliest stages of Gnosticism.

The Naassenes, the Sethians, the Mandaeans, the Perates, and the Borborites are regarded as Ophite sects; however, Hippolytus regards them as among the first to be called

simply "'Gnostics,' alleging that they alone have sounded the depths of

knowledge."[3]

Three classes

Thus there are three classes of men and three corresponding churches:[6]

1. Material (the Bound)

2. Psychic (the Called)

3. Spiritual (the Elect)

We should imagine that these indicate

1. The heathen chiefly captive under the dominion of matter.

2. Ordinary Christians.

3. Out of the many called, the few chosen members of the Naassene sect.

Elsewhere, however, a greater diversity of men is indicated. For the Saviour, we are told, said, "Unless ye eat my flesh and drink my blood,

ye shall not enter the kingdom of heaven; but even if ye drink the cup

that I drink of, whither I go ye cannot come." For every one must go to

his own nature. Therefore it was that he chose twelve apostles for the

twelve tribes, and by them spoke to every tribe. So all men cannot

receive the preaching of all the twelve, but each only according to his

own nature.

[edit] Creation

The Naassene work known to Hippolytus would seem to have been of what we may call a devotional character rather than a formal exposition

of doctrine, and this perhaps is why it is difficult to draw from the

accounts left us a thoroughly consistent scheme.

Thus, as we proceed, we are led to think of the first principle of nature, not as a single

threefold being, but as three distinct substances; on the one hand the

pre-existent, otherwise spoken of as the Good being, on the other hand

the "outpoured Chaos," intermediate, between these one called Autogenes, and also the Logos.

Chaos is naturally destitute of forms or qualities; neither does the preexistent being himself possess form, for though the cause of

everything that comes into being, it is itself none of them, but only

the seed from which they spring. The Logos is the mediator which draws

forms from above and transfers them to the world below.
Yet he seems to have a rival in this work; for we have reference made to a fourth

being, whence or how brought into existence we are not told, a "fiery

God," Esaldaios, the father of the idikos kosmos.

That is to say, it was this fiery being, the same who appeared to Moses in the burning bush, who gave forms to the choical or purely material

parts of nature. It is he who supplies the fiery heat of generation by

which these forms are still continued. In this work the Logos had no

part, for "all things were made through him, and without him was made

nothing." The "nothing" that was made without him is the kosmos idikos.

On the other hand, it is the Logos, who is identified with the serpent, and this again with the principle of Water, who brings down the

pneumatic and psychical elements, so that through him man became a

living soul. But he has now to do a greater work, namely, to provide

for the release of the higher elements now enslaved under the dominion

of matter, and for their restoration to the good God.

Exegesis

The writer, it will be seen, makes free use of the New Testament. He seems to have used all the four Gospels, but that of which he makes

most use is St. John's. He quotes from Paul's epistles to the Romans,

Corinthians (both letters), Galatians, and Ephesians. There is a

copious use also of the Old Testament; and besides we are told there is a use of the Gospel according to the Egyptians, and that of Thomas.

But what most characterizes the document under consideration is the

abundant use of pagan writings. For the author's method of exegesis

enables him to find his system in Homer with as much ease as in the Bible.

Great part of the extract given by Hippolytus is a commentary on a hymn to the Phrygian Attis, all the epithets applied to whom are shown

when etymologically examined, to be aspects of the Logos. One of the

first of the titles applied to Attis is papas—here we are taught to recognise him who brought to rest (epause) all the disorderly motion that prevailed before his appearing. To him all things cry paue, paue, ten asymphonian.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandaeanism

Mandaeism or Mandaeanism (Mandaic: Mandaiuta, Arabic: مندائية‎ Mandā'iyya, Persian: مندائیان) is a monotheistic religion with a strongly dualistic worldview. Its adherents, the Mandaeans, revere Adam, Abel, Seth, Enosh, Noah, Shem, Aram and especially John the Baptist.

Mandaeism has historically been practised primarily around the lower Euphrates and Tigris and the rivers that surround the Shatt-al-Arab waterway, part of southern Iraq and Khuzestan Province in Iran.

In Mandaeism, Jerusalem is considered a city of wickedness, dedicated to the god of Judaism, whom they call Adunay (Adonai) or Yurba (possibly YHWH) and consider to be an evil spirit. According to Sidra d-Yahia 54,

Jerusalem is "the stronghold that Adunay built ... [he] brought to it

falsehood in plenty, and it meant persecution against my tarmidia (Manda d-Hiia's disciples)."

In the Ginza Rba (15.11), it is said to have come into being as a result of the incestuous union of the seven planets with their evil mother Ruha d-Qudsha, who "left lewdness, perversion, and fornication in it. They said: 'Whoever lives in the city of Jerusalem will not

mention the name of God.'" (Elsewhere, however, it more prosaically

says the city was built by Solomon.) However, Yahya (John the Baptist), an important figure in the religion, is said to have been born there.

Later on, in the days of Pontius Pilate, it states that the good spirit Anush Utra went there, healed the sick and worked miracles, and made converts, confronting Jesus (whom they consider a false prophet) and refuting his arguments; but

its inhabitants opposed him and persecuted the converts, 365 of whom

were killed (GR 15.11) or forced out (GR 2.1.) Miriai, a Jewish princess, was converted, and fled to the shores of the Euphrates.

This angered Anush Utra, who received permission from God to destroy Jerusalem and the temple, smash the "seven columns," and slay the Jews

who lived there, after bringing out the remaining "believers."

Elsewhere, the Ginza Rba (18) prophesies that Jerusalem "must flourish

for a thousand years, remain a thousand years destroyed, and then the

entire Tibil (material world) will be destroyed."

In the Abahatan Qadmaiia prayer, repeated during baptism of the dead, the Mandaeans invoke blessings upon the 365 who they believe were killed or forced out of Jerusalem:

“ Those 365 priests who came forth from the city of Jerusalem, the city of this masiqta and dukhrana, a forgiveness of sins may there be for them.

Fundamental tenets

According to E.S. Drower, the Mandaean Gnosis is characterized by nine features, which appear in various forms in other gnostic sects:[5]

1. A supreme formless Entity, the expression of which in time and space is creation of spiritual, etheric, and material worlds and

beings. Production of these is delegated by It to a creator or creators

who originated in It. The cosmos is created by Archetypal Man, who

produces it in similitude to his own shape.

2. Dualism: a cosmic Father and Mother, Light and Darkness, Right and Left, syzygy in cosmic and microcosmic form.

3. As a feature of this dualism, counter-types, a world of ideas.

4. The soul is portrayed as an exile, a captive: home and origin being the supreme Entity to which the soul eventually returns.

5. Planets and stars influence fate and human beings, and are also places of detention after death.

6. A saviour spirit or saviour spirits which assist the soul on the journey through life and after it to 'worlds of light'.

7. A cult-language of symbol and metaphor. Ideas and qualities are personified.

8. 'Mysteries', i.e. sacraments to aid and purify the soul, to ensure rebirth into a spiritual body, and ascent from the world of matter. These are

often adaptations of existing seasonal and traditional rites to which

an esoteric interpretation is attached. In the case of the Naṣoreans

this interpretation is based upon the Creation story (see 1 and 2),

especially on the Divine Man, Adam, as crowned and anointed King-priest.

9. Great secrecy is enjoined upon initiates; full explanation of 1, 2, and 8 being

reserved for those considered able to understand and preserve the

gnosis.

Mandaeans believe in marriage and procreation, and in the importance of leading an ethical and moral lifestyle in this world, placing a high

priority upon family life. Consequently, Mandaeans do not practice celibacy or asceticism. Mandaeans will, however, abstain from strong drink and red meat. While they agree with other gnostic sects that the world is a prison governed by the planetary archons, they do not view it as a cruel and inhospitable one.

[edit] Mandaean scriptures

The Mandaeans have a large corpus of religious scriptures, the most important of which is the Genzā Rabbā or Ginza, a collection of history, theology, and prayers. The Genzā Rabbā is divided into two halves—the Genzā Smālā or "Left Ginza" and the Genzā Yeminā or "Right Ginza". By consulting the colophons in the Left Ginza, Jorunn J. Buckley has identified an uninterrupted chain of copyists to the late 2nd or early 3rd c. AD.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borborites

According to the Panarion of Epiphanius of Salamis (ch. 26), and Theodoret's Haereticarum Fabularum Compendium, the Borborites or Borborians (also Koddians; in Egypt, Phibionites; in other countries, Barbalites, Secundians, Socratites, etc.) were a libertine Gnostic sect, said to be descended from the Nicolaitans. The word "Borborite" comes from the Greek word Βορβορος, meaning "mud"; thus "Borborites" could be translated as "filthy ones."

Doctrine

They possessed certain sacred books, one called Noria (the name they gave to Noah's wife), a Gospel of Eve, Books of Seth, Revelations of Adam, etc. They used both the Old and New Testament, but did not acknowledge the God of the Old Testament as the supreme deity.

They taught that there were eight heavens, each under a separate archon. In the seventh reigned Sabaoth, creator of heaven and earth, the God of the Jews, represented by some

Borborites under the form of an ass or a hog; hence the Jewish

prohibition of swine's flesh. In the eighth heaven reigned Barbelo, the mother of the living; the Father of All, the supreme God; and Christ. They denied that Christ was born of Mary, or had a real body; and also the resurrection of the body.

The human soul after death wanders through the seven heavens, until it obtains rest with Barbelo. Man possesses a soul in common with plants and beasts. According to Augustine they taught that the soul was derived from the substance of God, and hence could not be polluted by contact with matter.

GILGAMESH.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilgamesh

In Mesopotamian mythology, Gilgamesh is credited with having been a demigod of superhuman strength who built a great city wall to defend his people

from external threats and travelled to meet Utnapishtim, the sage who

had survived the Great Deluge.

Gilgamesh, known as Bilgameṣ in the earliest text,[1] was the fifth king of Uruk (Early Dynastic II, first dynasty of Uruk), ruling circa 2700 BC, according to the Sumerian king list.

According to the Tummal Inscription,[2] Gilgamesh, and his son Urlugal, rebuilt the sanctuary of the goddess Ninlil, in Tummal, a sacred quarter in her city of Nippur. Gilgamesh is the central character in the Epic of Gilgamesh, the greatest surviving work of early Mesopotamian literature.

In the epic his father was Lugalbanda and his mother was Ninsun (whom some call Rimat Ninsun), a goddess. Gilgamesh is described as two parts god and one part man.

it also might be important to know that all three religions Judaism, Islam

said to be. as Aramaic was really the only language in the region

people spoke and is more identical to the revelations of the Vedas in India . as these were written by Aryans. not Hindus. and have revealed

the same information about paradise.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mithraism

The Mithraic Mysteries or Mysteries of Mithras (also Mithraism) was a mystery religion which became popular among the military in the Roman Empire, from the 1st to 4th centuries AD. Information on the cult is based

mainly on interpretations of the many surviving monuments. The most

characteristic of these are depictions Mithras as being born from a

rock, and as sacrificing a bull. His worshippers had a complex system

of seven grades of initiation, with ritual meals. They met in

underground temples, which temples survive in large numbers. Little

else is known for certain.

The mithraeum

See also: Mithraeum

A mithraeum found in the ruins of Ostia Antica, Italy.

Temples of Mithras are sunk below ground, windowless, and very distinctive. In cities, the basement of an apartment block might be

converted; elsewhere they might be excavated and vaulted over, or

converted from a natural cave. Mithraic temples are common in the

empire; although very unevenly distributed, with considerable numbers

found in Rome, Ostia, Numidia, Dalmatia, Britain and along the Rhine/Danube frontier; while being much less common in Greece, Egypt, and Syria [62] . Mithriac rituals being secret, Mithraism could only be practiced within a Mithraeum [63];

and consequently it may be safely concluded that areas without Mithraea

were also without Mithraists.

More than 420 Mithraic sites have now been identified [64].

By their nature Mithraea tend to survive when other forms of religious

structures do not; and consequently the relative prevalence of

Mithraism in the population may well tend to be over-estimated. For the

most part, Mithraea tend to be small, externally undistinguished, and

cheaply constructed; the cult generally preferring to create a new

centre rather than expand an existing one.

Degrees of initiation

In the Suda under the entry "Mithras", it states that "no one was permitted to be

initiated into them the mysteries of Mithras), until he should show

himself holy and steadfast by undergoing several graduated tests."[68] Gregory Nazianzen refers to the "tests in the mysteries of Mithras".[69]

There were seven grades of initiation into the mysteries of Mithras, which are listed by St. Jerome[70]. Manfred Clauss states that the number of grades, seven, must be

connected to the planets.

A mosaic in the Ostia Mithraeum of

Felicissimus depicts these grades, with heraldic emblems that are

connected either to the grades or are just symbols of the planets.

The

grades also have an inscription besides them commending each grade into

the protection of the different planetary gods. [71] In ascending order of importance the initiatory grades were:[72]

Grade Symbols Associated planet/Protecting deity

Corax (raven) beaker, caduceus Mercury

Nymphus (bridegroom, or male bride) lamp, diadem Venus

Miles (soldier) pouch, helmet, lance Mars

Leo (lion) batillum, sistrum, thunderbolts Jupiter
